Mar 16, 2018 · A series of experiments of the emulsified asphalt prepared by the emulsifiers were performed. The results showed that the emulsified asphalt could be stably stored for more than 5 days when the emulsifier was 2 wt% and the pH value was between 3 and 4. The result of demulsification experiments showed that the emulsifier is a slow-cracking and rapid-setting asphalt emulsifier.

Asphalt Emulsions 101 | Asphalt magazine

An asphalt emulsion is a stable dispersion of asphalt cement droplets in water, which can be pumped, stored and mixed with aggregates. An emulsion should “break” quickly upon contact with aggregate when mixed or after being sprayed. Breaking is the separation of the water from the asphalt. After breaking and curing, the asphalt residue has the adhesion, durability and water-resistance properties of the original base asphalt.

CATIONIC SLOW SETTING ASPHALT EMULSION

Asphalt emulsions are classified according to the electric charge that surrounds the asphalt particles ( i.e. cationic, anionic emulsions) and how quickly the suspended asphalt particles break (i.e. the water will evaporate, leaving the asphalt cement). A slow setting emulsion is designed for maximum mixing time with aggregates. Longer workability

An Introduction to Asphalt Emulsions | Asphalt magazine

Water is the second ingredient in an asphalt emulsion. Minerals or other materials in water can affect the production of stable emulsions. Water that is suitable for drinking may not be suitable for asphalt emulsions. The chemical used as an emulsifier greatly influences the properties of an asphalt emulsion. The emulsifier keeps the asphalt particles in suspension and controls the breaking time. …

Emulsified Asphalt - Pavement Interactive

The time required to break and set depends upon the type of emulsion, the application rate, the temperature of the surface onto which it is applied and environmental conditions (TRB, 2000 [2]). Under most circumstances, an emulsion will set in about 1 to 2 hours (TRB, 2000 [2]). ASTM D 3628 contains guidance on selection and use of emulsified asphalt.

EMULSION BASICS - pavementpreservation

seize or shear the asphalt emulsion. • DO NOT apply severe heat to pump packing glands or pump casing. The pump may be damaged and the asphalt may become even harder. • DO NOT dilute rapid-setting grades of emulsified asphalt with water. Medium and slow setting grades may be diluted, but always add water slowly to the asphalt emulsion. Never add the asphalt emulsion to a tank

What is Emulsion? | Western Asphalt Products

Emulsified asphalt is a pseudo-stabilization of asphalt cement (the "dispersed phase") suspended in water (the "continuous phase"). The prefix "pseudo" (literally meaning "false"), is applicable in describing the thermodynamic stability of the emulsion-system (the propensity of an emulsion to remain stable or alternatively to "break" – separation of the asphalt and water-phases).

ASPHALT EMULSIONS

A “1” or a “2” designates the viscosity of the emulsion, with “1” meaning lower viscosity and “2” meaning higher viscosity. If there is an “h” or “s” at the end of the name, it usually indicates the relative hardness of the base asphalt, with an “h” for a harder base and “s” for softer asphalt bases.
